The Concept and Process
This garden was created together with a small group of adults who are supported from Mirus*
The team chose to base their design on the Museum’s Warehouse building. You might spot the number ‘21’ painted on the upper floor of the outside of the building. This number refers to the old transit shed, which once stored goods arriving and leaving by dock and rail.
Some of these goods included exotic items like bananas, which inspired the inclusion of a banana plant in the garden.
The brickwork design also reflects the line of the train tracks that once ran through what is now the GRAFT garden.
The team wanted the space to echo the building’s warm brick and slate tones, as well as its shapes and textures—bringing a little of that history into the garden.
The Team – Mirus
Mirus provides support so that people with learning disabilities, mental ill-health, and autistic people can do the things they love, achieve their goals and live good lives in their communities.
The Garden Designer – Emma Yousef
Award-winning garden designer Emma Yousef worked closely with the group, helping them explore plant choices, layout, and how everything could come together beautifully.
The Artist – Ren Wolfe
Artist Ren Wolfe helped the group create a hanging installation, adding movement and gentle ‘clanking’ sounds inspired by the noises the 21 Shed might have made when it was in use.
The Plants
The beautiful plants in this garden were locally sourced from Killan Fawr Garden Centre, Dunvant, Swansea.
Here you can find information about accessibility throughout the Museum including parking, wheelchair access, lifts, baby changing facilities, assistance dogs, Braille resources, and induction loops.
The National Waterfront Museum does not have a dedicated car park.
However, there are several pay and display car parks situated just a short walk from the Museum. You can find more information on car parking facilities here
