Event:Confessions of a Traitor: The Psychology of Trust and Deception

Join us on the eve of Halloween for a thrilling evening as we unmask two of the most formidable Welsh contestants from The Traitors - Fiona and Amanda!

Prepare to question everything you think you know about honesty, trust and human behaviour, as we explore the fascinating psychology behind deception.
How did they fool their fellow players? What strategies did they use to stay hidden in plain sight? And what can their experiences reveal about the way we judge truth and lies in everyday life?
The Traitors will be joined by Swansea University psychologist Dr Alex Jones for a discussion that takes us behind the cloak-and-dagger world to reveal the science behind the decisions, emotions and behaviours that make deception so effective.
Discover the secrets behind building trust, maintaining a convincing cover story and reading the motives of others under pressure. Drawing on both real-life experiences from the show and psychological research, this event will uncover why spotting a liar is much harder than we think….
 
We'll explore questions including:
• How do people gain trust and influence others?
• What strategies and gameplay tactics helped the Traitors succeed?
• Can we really tell when someone is lying?
• What happens to our bodies when we deceive others?
• Why are humans often so poor at detecting deception?
• What role does emotion, intuition and bias play in our judgments of others?
 
Can you spot a traitor? Or could you be deceived too?
 
Dr Alex Jones
Alex is Associate Professor of Psychological Data Science at Swansea University, where he studies how we form impressions of other people from their faces — and why those impressions are so often wrong.
His research uses large-scale data and statistical modelling to ask why some faces look trustworthy, why we all agree on who looks honest, and why that agreement tells us almost nothing about who actually is. He has published widely on face perception, first impressions, and the measurement of individual differences in how well people recognise and read faces.

The National Waterfront Museum does not have a dedicated car park.

However, there are several pay and display car parks situated just a short walk from the Museum. You can find more information on car parking facilities here

 Eat, Drink, Shop

  • Our café is open, but providing a limited offer. 
  • The Museum shop will be open during your visit.
  • You are welcome to bring a picnic , while there’s nowhere to eat these within the museum, there are benches around the marina outside which make for a nice spot.
