In the Good Food Cardiff Zone there’ll be fun activities for all the family to learn about food which is good for people and the planet. Hosted by Food Cardiff with Beca Lyne-Pirkis (Cook, Presenter, Author & Star of Great British Bake Off), the zone will include inspiring workshops, demos, talks and activities celebrating local food.

Saturday 09/09/23

 

10.30-11.15 - Planet Friendly Food Swaps
Are plant-based foods really better for the planet? In this practical demo with Hannah from Green Squirrel we'll take a look at the impacts of different food choices and learn three easy (and very tasty!) recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner that will help you make everyday food swaps that cut the footprint of your food.

11.30-12.15 - Different Fruitures - A Family Friendly Play
Action Movement Peace is back bringing you an interactive theatre performance suitable for all ages! Travel to a possible future, the PIGS are in control. You can help stop them by using your creativity and voice, you'll help Seed on their journey to rediscover the forgotten true things...
Action Movement Peace is a Cardiff Based theatre company creating work that aims to connect people to nature, themselves and each other.

13.30-14.00 - Sourdough Bread Demo
Join David LaMasurier from Cardiff’s Pettigrew Bakery for a sourdough bread demo.

14.15-14:45 - Fun with Fruit & Veg - Seasonal Fruit Friends and Fruit and Veg Monsters
Fun activities for kids aged 5-10. Learn how to boost your ‘5 a day’ and make a healthy animal-themed fruit snack from seasonal fruits. Alternatively, create a ferociously fun fruit & vegetable monster.

16.00-16.30 - Cooking with Beca Lyne-Pirkis
Easy ideas for seasonal, sustainable eating without breaking the bank.

16.30-17.15 - Food Wales Harvest Quiz
A fun and engaging quiz focusing on fruits, vegetables, and food culture in Wales. Questions will focus on nutrition, fruit and vegetable seasons, food waste, and sustainability. There will be a chance to learn more about traditional Welsh foods and the relationship between food and culture in Wales today including questions around food collections at St Fagan's National Museum of History, including historical cooking implements and growing food. A quiz exploring aspects of eating sustainably and locally within Wales.

17.30-18.00 - The Art of Fermenting
Come discover the exciting world of food fermentation and learn new hands-on skills in this practical workshop! Together we will explore the process of making homemade sauerkraut, learn how to make tasty probiotic-rich water kefir and discuss the nutritional benefits of fermented foods.

At a time when we are all tightening our purse strings and looking for solutions in keeping our diets varied and healthy, Amanda & Hannah from Urban-Vertical CIC & Grangetown Kitchen Garden have devised some tasty and nutritious meals that you can easily prepare at home, using food surplus ingredients, veggies you can grow on your windowsill and a little bit of imagination so ‘Eating IN is the new Eating Out’.
Join this workshop to master your inner food surplus chef.

Join us as we explore the rich history and celebrate the versatility of the mighty Welsh apple! Experts from Amgueddfa Cymru will speak of tales of traditional cider making and whisk us through the generations to modern apple juice production. Representatives from Orchard Cardiff will highlight their work harvesting backyard fruit trees and share how you can get involved in community harvest events across Cardiff.

Researchers from the ZERO2FIVE Food Industry Centre at Cardiff Metropolitan University will be inviting people to take part in a citizen science food safety research project ‘Is your fridge cold enough?’1000 people will be given a free fridge thermometer to take home by taking part.
