In this one-day workshop you will learn about using local earth pigment to create your own unique natural art materials.
In the morning, we will go on a short walk to the industrial heritage area Garn Yr Erw to see some pigments in this landscape. Back in the studio Caroline will demonstrate how she makes pastels and paint from these pigments.
You will learn how to find and make your own unique art materials from pigments in your neighbourhood and consider some of the environmental ethics and safety considerations of working with earth and ‘waste stream’ pigment.
In the afternoon there will be time to try out art materials made with local pigment from around Big Pit and create your own images inspired by our walk. We will use pictures, maps and local geological information to inspire us.
This day is suitable for anyone with an interest in making art materials, no prior experience is required. You will need to be able to walk for 1.5 hours, we will walk at a moderate pace with stops and breaks. If you feel the walking element of the workshop is not for you, you are very welcome to stay on site and explore Big Pit instead.
