Big Pit National Coal Museum

Join us for our world-famous Underground Tour - for FREE!

Travel 300ft with a guide and discover what life was like for the thousands of men, women and children who worked at the coal face.

Children must be at least a metre tall to go underground.

Please note:

Admission

  • All free underground tour spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
  • Letting us know you are planning to visit does not guarantee an Underground Tour.
  • Any person under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Visitors must be above 1 meter tall to go on the Underground Tour.

Your Conduct

  • Whilst you and other visitors are at Big Pit, you must comply with all directions of our staff, relevant health and safety notices, policies and announcements made available to you.
  • Any breach of any of these terms, or any unacceptable behaviour by you or your guests that is likely to cause damage, nuisance, injury to any other visitor or member of our staff or to Big Pit itself, shall give rise to the right of Big Pit staff to eject you immediately from Big Pit.
  • We shall have the right to refuse admission or to eject any visitor from Big Pit if we deem granting you admission might be a risk to our property, the safety of others and/or affect the enjoyment of Big Pit by others.
  • You are expressly prohibited from copying, reproducing or republishing any part of the exhibitions or interpretation at Big Pit. It is a criminal offence to copy or attempt to copy the copyright protected materials on show within Big Pit.

Security

  • In the interests of safety, you may be asked to submit to a search of your person or belongings. Anyone refusing to submit or found to be in possession of materials which we believe to be dangerous or unsuitable, will be denied entry or removed from Big Pit.
  • If you are arriving by car you will need to pay for parking on arrival at £5 per day. Parking is FREE for disabled badge holders and motorbikes.
  • We accept no responsibility for the loss, theft, or damage to any vehicle (or its contents) while parked within our property.
  • Parking on the roads around Big Pit, outside of the designated car parking area, is prohibited.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. For safety reasons, we reserve the right to conduct bag searches when entering the Museum.

Access Guide

 Parking

If you are arriving by car you will need to pay on arrival. £5 per day. FREE for disabled badge holders and motorbikes. This charge is for parking only – entry to the Museum remains free.

 Eat, drink, shop

Our Gift Shop, which has been inspired by the underground experience and our collections, will be open during your visit, selling a wide selection of bespoke products and gifts. 

Our Coffee Shop is open daily 10am-4pm serving a small range of hot and cold drinks, cakes and snacks. 

You're welcome to bring a picnic to the Museum, but please take your rubbish home with you and help us keep Big Pit tidy.
