Aberfan 60

Around 9.15am on 21 October 1966, Merthyr Vale Colliery tip collapsed onto the village of Aberfan, claiming the lives of 116 children and 28 adults.

In recent years, Amgueddfa Cymru has worked with people connected to Aberfan and surrounding communities to collect objects, memories and oral histories linked to the disaster and its aftermath. These contributions have helped shape Aberfan 60, a programme of remembrance, reflection and learning marking 60 years since the disaster

Through personal stories, oral histories, objects and archives, Aberfan 60 explores the experiences of those affected and the lasting impact of the disaster on individuals, families and communities. It brings together memories of those who died, the experiences of those affected, and the ways in which Aberfan continues to be remembered across Wales.
