Event:Stories from Aberfan

Big Pit National Coal Museum

Information

1 October 2026 – 1 October 2027
Cost Free
Suitability All

When news of the Aberfan disaster spread on 21 October 1966, hundreds of people travelled to the village to offer support. Many came from mining communities across south Wales, including colliery rescue teams, emergency services, volunteers and others who helped in the response to the disaster.

Bringing together personal objects, memories and oral histories, this display shares the experiences of people connected to the disaster and those involved in its aftermath. Some of these stories and items are being displayed publicly for the first time.

Rooted in the history of the Welsh coalfield, the display explores the grief felt across communities, the compassion shown in response, and the ways in which the memory of Aberfan continues to be carried today. Through these personal stories and possessions, families and communities hope that those who lost their lives will be remembered not only for the tragedy itself, but as individuals whose stories continue to be shared.
